sudden crash

I think my PC has had a sudden crash, I was looking at a site when the screen became all garbled and nonsense, I switched the PC off and restarted, only to find that the icons on desktop were visible but the icon names were highlighted blue.
The start menu catagories were all ok but when clicking an item the name highlighted green.I may have resolved this problem by going to sqreen properties and found that the screen colors were lowest and I changed them to 32 bit, this rearranged the desktop. BUT now I cannot get any server on the internet, I go to IE and get server not found.
I know that my internet is ok because I am using another PC on same network.
The whole of the sites give same message server not found.

Further to the last post I am on a wired Livebox aned am running two ethernets from the box. to two PCs. This one is ok as you can see.

Try a 'System Restore to a date before the crash.

Thanks Pete, I fired up the PC this morning and lo and behold Back to normal, BUT I am anxious to find out how and why it crashed.
I have looked in Device Mansger, all ok, all spyware is gone and AVG has found no faults, But I still need to know.
Thanks again my friend   Fred

And the internet is here too

Hi freq27,
Go to Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools and select Event Viewer. Highlight each of the subjects in the left hand pane and read the logs in the right hand pane. You may be able to see what problems occurred and when. See if anything happened at the time and date you had the crash.
