A positive experience of Ubuntu

This warmed my opensource heart.
from : localhost/copywriterunderground.com/200...-word-workers/
A complete newcomer to linux give ubuntu a try for a month, seems to be going well for him, though I agree with him on the lack of a good replacement for live writer.
Still good news for ubuntu not from the usual sources

quotlaying a standard commercial DVD wasn’t possible without messing with indecipherable command lines.quot;
If he had come on here first Tim, he would gave found that not true ( restricted extras ).
One of the problems is the outdated advice out there.

Nice to see a pleasant experience (  see it can happen reactiv8 ! )
.
The ethernet connection to update wireless is a tip to remember. My old laptop with ubuntu did the same when I connected it. Really impressed.

Absolutely right about the DVD, it's a shame it's not more advertised from within Ubuntu (maybe the first time you try and play an supported codec for example).
I'm going to try the wireless thing too as my notebook wireless card wasn't supported with the default install.

Hi Bob!

Indeed good to see positive news about Ubuntu! - Although I'm a bit peeved that you think I'm so negative?! - I'm not at all, just that I somethimes get frustrated and/or exasperated, but I'm still on my way to Nirvana and would always encourage others to follow suit too! Miny Fresh or Ubuntu - Whsi ever suits your hardware ... !

Not seeing you as negative Chris, you just seem to have had a lot more grief than most !
My Mint Elyssa is running as beautifully as her name suggests
I did a total re-install of XP (Sp1) to a new hard drive for my brother yesterday. What a chore!
It's as Penguin says, let the average user do that and they will have a different view of things.

Lucky him!
I tried Ubuntu through a couple of releases (gutsy gibbon - hardy heron?). After all my bother I've re-installed XP. Ubuntu was taking up far too much time trying to get it to work properly.
I'll try it again though...maybe in ten years time?

I've followed his blog to #4. Nice to see someone not give up at first problem

Please not?! I've persevered with Linux, thanks to much help from my assembled wise peers here, and after not getting on so well with Ubuntu - Largely down to having the WRONG graphics cards (No No No to ATI ...), but I've 'graduated' to Minty 5 Elyssa Freshness with two nVidia 6000 series cards (AGP amp; PCI Express), and am now a very happy bunny! Apart from the hardware which ain't so dear, all the software is FREE, works a treat and above all NO VIRUSES - So Peace of Mind, and rapid, stable systems with a very bright future - So, join us or you will regret it?!

Remember:~ Patience is a VIRTUE!

Same problem, ATI graphics.
OK maybe not ten years but at least 'til I find time to shop for a graphics card.

This will do the job:  from : localhost/it's AGP you need:  from : localhost/you've got an ATI graphics laptop, then the solution is to re-install Windows, sell it and buy a new one with an Intel GPU and chipset.
